How to Cancel Allstate Insurance: Methods, Fees, and Refunds

To cancel Allstate insurance, call 1-800-726-6033, contact your local Allstate agent, or start the request through the Allstate mobile app.1Allstate. Contact Allstate: Chat, Find an Agent, Email and More The cancellation itself takes minutes. The parts that cost people money are the ones that happen around it: short-rate fees on mid-term cancellations, lost bundle discounts on the policies you keep, and coverage gaps that raise your rates for years. Line up your replacement policy first, then call.

Before You Call, Pull Your Declarations Page

Your declarations page lists your policy period, premium, coverage limits, and any endorsements. Look for two things: the renewal date and the cancellation terms. Canceling right before renewal avoids most fee complications because there is little unearned premium left. Canceling mid-term is where short-rate penalties show up.

Have your policy number ready when you call. The agent will verify your identity and ask why you’re leaving. Expect a retention offer, especially if your reason is price.

The Three Ways to Cancel

By Phone or Through Your Agent

Calling 1-800-726-6033 or your local agent is the most reliable route. You can set a specific cancellation date, confirm your refund amount, and get verbal confirmation the request went through. A local agent can also handle state-specific paperwork and is especially useful if your policy is bundled or tied to a mortgage escrow account.

In Writing

You can also submit a cancellation request by mail, fax, or email. Include your full name, policy number, the date you want coverage to end, and your signature. Certified mail gives you proof of the date Allstate received the request, which matters if a payment posts after you thought you were canceled. If a specific form is required for your policy type, your agent can send it.

Through the App

For some policy types, you can start cancellation in the Allstate app under your policy details. Not every policy or every state supports full digital cancellation, and Allstate may still require a follow-up phone call or email to finalize the request. Confirm the cancellation is complete before assuming coverage has ended.

Fees and How Your Refund Is Calculated

If you cancel mid-term, Allstate may apply a short-rate cancellation fee. A prorated refund returns 100% of the premium for the unused portion of your policy. A short-rate refund returns roughly 90% of that prorated amount, with the insurer keeping the difference as a penalty for early termination.2Allstate. Cancel Car Insurance or Adjust Your Policy On a $1,200 annual policy canceled six months in, the difference works out to around $60.

Administrative fees can apply on policies with specialized endorsements or complex coverage structures, though they are less common for straightforward cancellations. Your declarations page or agent can tell you upfront what you’ll owe.

If you prepaid your premium, you are owed a refund for the unused period, minus any fees. Refunds go back through your original payment method. Policies paid in full generate faster refunds than monthly-billed policies, where outstanding balances have to be settled first. Many states require insurers to return unearned premium within roughly 15 to 30 business days after the cancellation date, though timelines vary. If a refund does not show up, call customer service; delays often trace to a billing discrepancy or a refund routed to a premium finance company instead of directly to you.

Do Not Let Your Coverage Lapse

A gap in auto insurance, even a short one, raises your rates when you shop for a new policy. Drivers with a lapse of 30 days or less see an average rate increase of about 8%, and gaps longer than 30 days push that to around 35%. Most states require continuous auto coverage, and driving uninsured can bring fines, license suspension, or registration problems.

The fix is simple: bind your replacement policy before you cancel Allstate, and set the new policy’s start date to match your Allstate cancellation date. When you call Allstate, give them the exact date your new coverage begins. Many states run electronic verification systems that flag lapses within days.

Canceling One Policy in a Bundle

If you have multiple Allstate policies bundled for a discount, canceling one changes the price of the others. Allstate confirms that dropping a policy from a bundle “may impact any multi-policy discounts associated with that policy.”3Allstate. Bundle Home and Auto Insurance Bundle savings can reach up to 25%, so losing that discount on your remaining coverage may be a noticeable increase at the next billing cycle.

Ask your agent to quote what your remaining policies will cost without the bundle discount before you cancel. Sometimes the savings from moving one policy to a competitor are wiped out by the discount you lose on the policies that stay.

If Your Homeowners Policy Is Paid Through Escrow

When your homeowners premium is paid through your mortgage escrow account, canceling requires an extra step. Notify your mortgage lender and send them proof that replacement coverage is already in place. Lenders require continuous hazard insurance to protect their interest in the property.

If your lender finds a gap, they can buy force-placed insurance on your behalf and bill you for it.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Consumer Advisory: Take Action When Home Insurance Is Cancelled or Costs Surge Force-placed policies typically cost far more than one you’d buy yourself and provide less coverage.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1024.37 Force-Placed Insurance Send your new policy’s declarations page to your lender as soon as coverage binds, and follow up to confirm they received it.

What Happens to an Open Claim

Canceling does not end a claim you already filed. As long as the loss occurred while your policy was in force, Allstate is still responsible for handling and paying it. Response times can slow once you’re no longer an active customer, and any coverage tied to ongoing needs, like rental car reimbursement after an accident, will not apply if the need arises after your policy ends. If you’re in the middle of a claim, consider waiting until it’s resolved, or at minimum get written confirmation from your adjuster about where things stand before you cancel.

You Can Cancel at Any Time

As a policyholder, you can cancel at any time. The advance-notice rules you may have read about, typically 10 to 30 days, apply to the insurer canceling on you, not the other way around. A few states add minor procedural requirements for policyholder-initiated cancellations. Your state’s department of insurance website is the place to check refund timelines and whether your insurer can charge a cancellation fee where you live.
