How to Cancel Your USAA Renters Insurance Policy

To cancel your USAA renters insurance, call 800-531-USAA (8722) and ask a representative to end the policy. There’s no cancellation fee, and USAA will issue a pro-rata refund for any prepaid premium covering days you won’t use.1USAA. Cancel Your USAA Renters Insurance Policy The call itself is short. What matters is what you do before and after it.

Check Three Things Before You Call

A few minutes of review prevents the most common problems.

  • Your lease. Most states allow landlords to require renters insurance as a lease condition. Canceling while that requirement is in force puts you in violation and can lead to a notice to cure or eviction. If you’re canceling because you’re moving out, set the cancellation date to fall on or after your move-out date.
  • Your bundle discount. USAA discounts your auto premium when you also carry renters insurance. Dropping the renters policy removes that discount, so your auto rate will likely rise. Check what auto costs without the bundle before you decide.
  • Replacement coverage. If you’re switching insurers, bind the new policy first. A gap of even one day counts as a lapse and can push up future premiums.

Making the Call

USAA does not let you cancel renters insurance through the website or mobile app. You have to speak with a representative at 800-531-8722.1USAA. Cancel Your USAA Renters Insurance Policy

Have these ready:

  • Your policy number, on the declarations page, any billing statement, or in the USAA app under your renters policy.
  • Your desired cancellation date. The policy contract says cancellation cannot take effect earlier than the date you request it unless USAA agrees to backdate. A future date is fine and often smart.2USAA. USAA Renters Protection Policy
  • Identity verification details such as your full name, date of birth, or USAA membership number.

Tell the representative the exact date you want coverage to end. If you don’t specify one, USAA typically processes cancellation effective the day of the call. Confirm the date on the phone before you hang up.

How the Refund Works

USAA refunds on a pro-rata basis. Pay six months upfront, cancel after two, and you get four months back. The contract commits USAA to issuing the refund “within a reasonable time after the date cancellation takes effect.”2USAA. USAA Renters Protection Policy In practice, refunds typically arrive within 3 to 10 business days, either by direct deposit or mailed check.

If you pay monthly and cancel mid-cycle, you may owe a small amount for the days you were still covered. Ask the representative what your final balance looks like.

If you’re on autopay, check your USAA account or bank after the call to confirm no further drafts are scheduled. Autopay doesn’t always stop cleanly on the cancellation date, particularly if the next draft was already queued.

After You Cancel

USAA sends a cancellation confirmation by email, through the app, or by mail, depending on your communication preferences. Open it as soon as it arrives and verify the effective date matches what you agreed to. If it doesn’t, call back the same day.

If your lease required renters insurance, send your landlord the cancellation confirmation along with proof of any replacement policy. Landlords typically want both documents to confirm there’s no gap in coverage through your lease term.

Keep the confirmation. It’s the document you’ll want if a billing dispute surfaces months later or your landlord questions whether you carried coverage up to move-out.

Avoiding a Coverage Gap When Switching Insurers

If you’re moving to another company rather than dropping coverage entirely, timing is the whole game. A one-day gap is technically a lapse, and future insurers price accordingly.

Bind the new policy first and get the effective date in writing. Then call USAA and set your cancellation for the same day the new coverage begins, or a day later if you want a brief overlap. A day of double coverage on a renters policy costs almost nothing and rules out any gap.

If your new insurer wants proof of prior coverage, USAA can provide documentation of your coverage history and cancellation date. Request it during the cancellation call or shortly after.

Don’t Just Stop Paying

Letting the policy lapse by skipping payments works eventually, but every version of the outcome is worse than a phone call.

Under the policy contract, USAA can cancel for non-payment after giving at least 10 days’ written notice.2USAA. USAA Renters Protection Policy During that window you still have coverage and still owe premium, so an unpaid balance can accrue against your account.

A non-payment cancellation also looks different from a voluntary one on your insurance history. Insurers routinely ask whether a prior policy was canceled by the carrier, and answering yes tends to raise rates. It can also affect how USAA treats you on future policies. A five-minute call avoids all of it.

Bundle Discount and Subscriber Savings Account

Because canceling the renters policy removes you from the multi-policy bundle, your auto premium will likely reset to the single-policy rate. Log into your USAA account and check what auto costs without the discount before you finalize the cancellation. If the goal was saving money, the numbers might not work out the way you expect.

USAA also maintains a Subscriber Savings Account for eligible members with property and casualty policies. If the renters policy is your only P&C coverage with USAA, canceling it makes the balance eligible for distribution, which typically takes about six months to process after all qualifying policies close. If you still hold an auto policy or other P&C coverage, the account stays active.
