What Does AT&T Insurance Cover for iPhones?

AT&T’s Protect Advantage plan, the main insurance option for iPhones on AT&T, covers accidental damage such as cracked screens and liquid harm, loss, theft, and post-warranty hardware malfunctions. Eligible repairs carry a $0 service fee, and replacements cost a deductible ranging from $25 to $400 depending on your iPhone’s tier. Monthly premiums start at $16, and there’s no cap on the number of claims you can file.

What the Plan Covers

Protect Advantage bundles three things: insurance for damage, loss, and theft; an extended service contract for malfunctions after Apple’s warranty ends; and access to ProTech expert support. It comes in a single-device version at $16, $19, or $25 per month depending on your iPhone’s pricing tier, and a multi-device version at $50 per month that covers phones, tablets, watches, and other connected devices on the account.1AT&T. Phone Insurance and Device Protection – Unlimited Claims

AT&T also sells a simpler product called AT&T Mobile Insurance without the service contract or ProTech support, with tighter claim limits and a different deductible structure. Most of what follows describes Protect Advantage, since that’s the plan AT&T actively markets.

Accidental Damage

Protect Advantage covers accidental physical damage that affects how the phone works: cracked screens, water damage, broken buttons, and similar. Apple’s standard warranty won’t touch any of that, since it only covers manufacturing defects. Repairs go through authorized service providers using genuine Apple parts, and same-day screen repairs may be available at select locations. If the damage is beyond repair, you’ll get a replacement instead, at a higher out-of-pocket cost than a repair.

Claims aren’t capped in number. Both the insurance and service contract sides of Protect Advantage allow unlimited claims, with each claim limited to $3,500 in value.2AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Device Protection Plans Standalone Mobile Insurance, by contrast, limits you to two claims in any 12 consecutive months.3AT&T. AT&T Mobile Insurance Terms and Conditions

Loss and Theft

A lost or stolen iPhone qualifies for a replacement device, which may be new or certified refurbished, of the same or a comparable model. Asurion, AT&T’s claims administrator, processes these, and many customers receive replacements by the next business day after approval.

You have 60 days from the incident to file.4AT&T Support. File a Mobile Device Protection Claim For theft, you’re required to notify law enforcement and provide a police report case number as part of the claim.5AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Program Details Delayed reporting or inconsistent details about what happened can lead to a denial.

Hardware Malfunctions

Once Apple’s one-year warranty runs out, the extended service contract inside Protect Advantage picks up hardware and electrical failures: an unresponsive touchscreen, a failing battery, a charging port that stops working on its own. Repairs use genuine Apple parts through authorized providers, and the service fee is $0 for eligible devices.6AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Multi-Device Devices that can’t be repaired are replaced. Standalone Mobile Insurance does not include this malfunction coverage, which is one of the main reasons people choose Protect Advantage over the cheaper plan.

What You’ll Pay When You File

Screen repairs, battery replacements, and other eligible repairs carry a $0 service fee under Protect Advantage regardless of your device tier.7AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Program Changes You pay a deductible when your iPhone is replaced, whether because it was damaged beyond repair, lost, or stolen. Deductibles run by tier:

  • Tier 1: $25
  • Tier 2: $100
  • Tier 3: $225
  • Tier 4: $275
  • Tier 5: $300
  • Tier 6: $400

These apply to any replacement claim.2AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Device Protection Plans For reference, the iPhone SE sits in Tier 2 at $100, and the iPhone 13 through 15 lines generally sit in Tier 4 at $275.8AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Newer flagship models will likely fall into a higher tier. Confirm your model’s tier with AT&T before you assume a number.

Declining Deductible

Staying claim-free reduces what you’d owe on a future replacement. After six consecutive months without a claim, you get 25% off the standard deductible. After 12 months or more, the discount rises to 50%. On a Tier 4 iPhone at $275, twelve claim-free months brings a replacement down to roughly $138. Only replacement claims reset the clock; screen repairs and battery replacements don’t count against it, since those already cost $0.9AT&T. AT&T Mobile Insurance Program Details

What’s Not Covered

A few common exclusions catch people off guard. Cosmetic damage that doesn’t affect how the phone works, like scratches or minor dents on the back glass, won’t qualify.3AT&T. AT&T Mobile Insurance Terms and Conditions Neither will damage you cause on purpose. The full exclusion list includes:

  • Intentional damage and fraudulent claims
  • Cosmetic wear that doesn’t impair function
  • Damage following unauthorized third-party repairs, which can void coverage
  • Issues covered by a manufacturer recall
  • Malware and software-related problems
  • Data loss (the plan covers the device, not what’s on it)
  • Accessories such as cases, chargers, and earbuds

The multi-device plan adds two more exclusions: power surge damage, and losses to non-connected devices (a Wi-Fi-only tablet, for example) within the first 30 days of enrollment.10AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage

When You Can Enroll

You can add Protect Advantage when you buy your iPhone or within 30 days of purchase. The device has to be undamaged and working normally at the time.1AT&T. Phone Insurance and Device Protection – Unlimited Claims The same 30-day window applies if you bring your own iPhone and activate it on AT&T.5AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Program Details

Miss that window and you’ll generally have to wait for an open enrollment period. This is where people get burned: they skip insurance at purchase, plan to add it later, then crack the screen a month in and find they can’t sign up retroactively. You can cancel Protect Advantage anytime for a prorated refund of the month’s premium, but re-enrollment is subject to the same restrictions.5AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Program Details

How to File a Claim

Claims go through Asurion and must be filed within 60 days of the loss or damage.4AT&T Support. File a Mobile Device Protection Claim You can file online through AT&T’s device protection portal or by phone. Expect to explain what happened, when, and where.

Theft claims require a police report or at least a case number.5AT&T. AT&T Protect Advantage Program Details Asurion may ask for supporting documents like proof of purchase. Inconsistencies between your description of the incident and other records can slow the process or lead to a denial, so be accurate the first time.

Once approved, repairs are scheduled through an authorized provider. Replacements typically ship within one business day and may arrive as certified refurbished units tested to meet functional standards. If you get a replacement, you’ll usually need to return the damaged phone within a set window or you’ll be billed for it.

If a claim is denied, your first move is to contact Asurion for a review and submit any additional evidence. AT&T also has a formal Notice of Dispute process handled by its legal department, with a response typically within 60 days.11AT&T Support. ProTech Support Included

Protect Advantage also comes with ProTech expert help for general tech questions, streaming service setup, device performance tuning, and data transfer to a replacement phone.
