Teladoc is accepted by most major U.S. health insurers, including Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Centene, HCSC, CareFirst, and Oscar, and it also works with Medicare, most state Medicaid programs, TRICARE, and a large share of employer-sponsored plans.1Teladoc Health. How to Confirm Your Plan Covers Teladoc
Three routes will tell you what you need to know before booking.
Set up an account on TeladocHealth.com or the mobile app and add your insurance details. If your plan is recognized, you’ll see your copay or visit cost.2Teladoc Health. How Does Teladoc Health Work With My Insurance Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask whether telehealth visits through Teladoc are an in-network benefit. Or pull up your Summary of Benefits and Coverage, the standardized document every plan must provide, which lists covered services and your share of the cost.3CMS. If Teladoc came through your job, ask HR or your benefits manager. Employers often subsidize telehealth at a lower copay than in-person care, and that discount doesn’t always show up until you check.
Private and Marketplace Plans
Most private insurers now cover telehealth as a standard benefit. Over 40 states require private insurers to cover telehealth in the same manner as in-person care, and roughly half of those states also require payment parity, meaning the insurer reimburses the virtual visit at the same rate as an office visit. These rules cover individual plans and fully insured employer plans on the ACA marketplace.
UnitedHealthcare offers $0 virtual urgent care on many of its individual and family ACA marketplace plans.4UnitedHealthcare. ACA Marketplace Virtual Care Benefits Other major carriers build telehealth in with copays that usually match or fall below a primary care office visit. Some plans waive the copay entirely; others apply the visit to your deductible first.
The service type matters. General medical and behavioral health visits through Teladoc are covered on most private plans without much fuss. Specialty visits like dermatology, nutrition counseling, or chronic condition management can carry different copays or require prior authorization. The Summary of Benefits and Coverage is the most reliable place to sort this out for your plan.
Medicare
Medicare Part B covers telehealth visits, including medical consultations, mental health therapy, diabetes self-management training, and cardiac rehabilitation.5Medicare.gov. Telehealth Insurance Coverage After you meet the $283 Part B deductible in 2026, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.6CMS. 2026 Medicare Parts A and B Premiums and Deductibles A Medigap or Medicare Supplement plan often picks up the remaining 20%.
Through December 31, 2027, Medicare beneficiaries can receive telehealth services from anywhere in the United States, including their own home.7CMS. Telehealth FAQ Starting in 2028, most telehealth visits other than behavioral health will revert to requiring the patient to be at a medical facility in a rural area. If you rely on home-based telehealth through Teladoc, watch that deadline.
Medicare Advantage plans often go further than Original Medicare. Many reduce or eliminate cost-sharing for virtual visits and add services Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like dermatology consults or nutrition counseling.5Medicare.gov. Telehealth Insurance Coverage Benefits vary significantly by carrier, so check with the plan directly.
Medicaid
Medicaid telehealth coverage varies by state. Each state decides whether to cover telehealth, which services and providers qualify, and how much to reimburse.8Medicaid.gov. Reimbursement for Telehealth and Provider and Facility Guidelines Most states have expanded coverage to include video visits, audio-only calls, and the patient’s home as an approved location.9Telehealth.HHS.gov. State Medicaid Telehealth Coverage Some states still restrict which services qualify or require prior authorization.
If you’re in a Medicaid managed care plan, Teladoc may already be in-network. Contact the managed care organization or check your member portal to confirm. Anyone dual-eligible for Medicare and Medicaid should look closely at how the two programs coordinate, because cost-sharing depends on which one covers a given service.
TRICARE
TRICARE covers virtual health visits, and the cost-share for a telehealth visit matches the cost-share for the equivalent in-person appointment.10TRICARE. Virtual Health – Care From Anywhere Covered services include office visits and mental health care by video or phone. Referral rules follow the in-person structure: active duty service members need a referral for all virtual visits, and TRICARE Select enrollees generally do not.
TRICARE For Life beneficiaries should know that Medicare pays first for any telehealth service Medicare covers. For virtual services Medicare doesn’t cover but TRICARE does, TRICARE pays first, and you’ll owe the TRICARE deductible and cost-share.10TRICARE. Virtual Health – Care From Anywhere
Employer-Sponsored Plans
Most large employers include telehealth in their benefits, and the specifics depend on the plan’s structure. Fully insured plans follow the carrier’s standard telehealth policies, which usually include Teladoc at a copay similar to a primary care visit. Self-funded plans, where the employer pays claims directly instead of buying a traditional insurance product, can structure telehealth benefits however they choose.11CMS. Self-Funded, Non-Federal Governmental Plans Some self-funded employers cover Teladoc at $0 to steer employees away from emergency rooms and urgent care clinics.
A high-deductible health plan paired with an HSA usually requires you to pay the full Teladoc visit cost until you hit the annual deductible.12Internal Revenue Service. Publication 969 (2025), Health Savings Accounts and Other Tax-Favored Health Plans Some employers offset that with a set number of free telehealth visits per year or by folding Teladoc into wellness programs.
If you leave a job and elect COBRA, your Teladoc benefit follows. COBRA continuation is the same coverage you had as an active employee, so any telehealth benefits carry through the continuation period.13U.S. Department of Labor. COBRA Continuation Coverage You’ll pay the full premium yourself, which is a good reason to verify your telehealth copay before scheduling.
