What Is AARP Insurance? Medicare, Life, Auto, and Home Plans

AARP insurance is a family of health, life, auto, home, dental, and vision policies sold under the AARP name and designed with older adults in mind. AARP itself does not underwrite any of it. The organization licenses its brand to three main partners: UnitedHealthcare for Medicare plans, The Hartford for auto and property coverage, and New York Life for life insurance. Each insurer sets its own prices, handles its own claims, and makes its own coverage decisions.

Who Actually Underwrites AARP Insurance

Knowing which company backs your policy matters the moment you need to file a claim or dispute a denial. AARP’s role is essentially that of an endorser. The three primary partners each run a distinct product line:

  • UnitedHealthcare administers all AARP-branded Medicare plans, including Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement (Medigap), and Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.1UnitedHealthcare. AARP Medicare Plans from UnitedHealthcare
  • The Hartford underwrites AARP auto, homeowners, renters, and condo insurance. It has been AARP’s exclusive auto and home insurance partner since 1984.2The Hartford. AARP Insurance From The Hartford
  • New York Life underwrites all AARP life insurance, including term, permanent, and guaranteed acceptance policies.3AARP. AARP Term Life Insurance from New York Life

These are standard insurance products subject to state and federal regulation. The AARP name gets the plans in front of you, but the underwriter is the party you’ll actually deal with.

Who Qualifies

AARP membership is open to anyone 18 or older, though several insurance products carry their own age limits.4AARP. What Is AARPs Membership Age Requirement to Join Auto and home insurance through The Hartford requires the policyholder to be an AARP member aged 50 or older.2The Hartford. AARP Insurance From The Hartford Life insurance has its own brackets depending on the product.

Medicare plans are the important exception. You do not need to be an AARP member to enroll in an AARP Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Part D drug plan.5UnitedHealthcare. Membership alone does not guarantee approval for any product. Auto applicants still go through underwriting based on driving record and claims history. Life insurance applicants answer health questions, unless they choose a guaranteed acceptance policy and accept its graded benefit period in return.

Medicare Health Plans

Medicare coverage is the centerpiece of AARP’s lineup, and it splits into three distinct product types. Understanding the differences prevents a common mistake: buying coverage that overlaps or conflicts with what you already have.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

AARP Medicare Advantage plans replace Original Medicare. They bundle hospital coverage (Part A), medical coverage (Part B), and usually prescription drugs into a single plan, and many add dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits that Original Medicare does not cover.1UnitedHealthcare. AARP Medicare Plans from UnitedHealthcare The trade-off is provider networks, referrals, and in-network limits.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare rather than replacing it, helping cover the copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles Original Medicare leaves behind.1UnitedHealthcare. You cannot carry both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap policy at the same time. If you join Advantage, the Medigap policy becomes unusable. The best window to buy Medigap is the six months after you first enroll in Part B at 65 or older, because during that period insurers cannot reject you or charge more for preexisting conditions. After that, insurers in most states can factor in your health status.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drugs)

Part D plans cover prescription drugs through a tiered formulary, where generics typically cost the least and specialty medications the most. You can pair Part D with Original Medicare or with a Medigap plan, but not with a Medicare Advantage plan that already includes drug coverage.1UnitedHealthcare. Life Insurance

New York Life underwrites all three AARP life insurance products. None require a full medical exam, which is a selling point for older applicants who might struggle with traditional underwriting.

Term Life

AARP term life coverage goes up to $150,000 and remains in effect until age 80, when the policy ends.7AARP. AARP Life Insurance Plans and Member Benefits There is no medical exam, though the application includes health questions.3AARP. AARP Term Life Insurance from New York Life Term coverage is the simplest and least expensive option, but it builds no cash value and stops paying once you age out.

Permanent (Whole) Life

Permanent coverage goes up to $100,000 and lasts your entire life, with guaranteed rates that never increase.8AARP. AARP Permanent Life Insurance from New York Life Whole life policies accumulate cash value you can borrow against, though outstanding loans reduce the death benefit. Coverage amounts are lower than what term offers, and premiums are higher for the same face value.

Guaranteed Acceptance Life

Guaranteed acceptance approves every applicant who meets the age requirement, with no health questions at all. Coverage goes up to $30,000. The catch is a two-year limited benefit period: if you die from natural causes within the first two years, your beneficiaries receive a return of premiums paid rather than the full death benefit.9AARP. AARP Guaranteed Acceptance Life Insurance from New York Life Accidental death during that period typically pays the full amount. This graded structure is standard for no-questions-asked policies.

AARP also offers long-term care coverage through New York Life for services like home health aides and assisted living, which standard health and life insurance do not address.

Auto Insurance

The Hartford’s AARP auto policy is built around features that reward experienced drivers with clean records:

  • Disappearing deductible: after three consecutive years with a clean driving record, your collision deductible drops by $50, and it continues shrinking by $50 each claim-free year until it reaches zero.10The Hartford. A Guide to Understanding Your AARP Auto Insurance Policy from The Hartford
  • Accident forgiveness: your first at-fault accident will not trigger a premium increase, provided all drivers on the policy have been accident-free for five straight years with The Hartford.11The Hartford. AARP Auto Insurance From The Hartford
  • New car replacement: if your new car is totaled, The Hartford pays to replace it with a new vehicle of the same make and model, without subtracting for depreciation.11The Hartford. AARP Auto Insurance From The Hartford
  • RecoverCare: helps pay for home services like cleaning and meal preparation if you are injured in a car accident and cannot do them yourself. Availability varies by state.11The Hartford. AARP Auto Insurance From The Hartford

Accident forgiveness and the disappearing deductible are not available in California.11The Hartford. AARP Auto Insurance From The Hartford State-by-state variation is common with auto insurance, so confirm which features apply where you live before you commit.

Homeowners, Condo, and Renters Insurance

The Hartford also handles AARP-branded property insurance. Auto and home can be bundled for a discount, though The Hartford does not publish a specific percentage.12AARP. AARP Auto Insurance from The Hartford

Homeowners

Homeowners coverage includes standard dwelling protection, personal property, and liability. Two features stand out: “New for Old” replacement, which replaces destroyed belongings with new items of comparable quality rather than paying depreciated value, and a disappearing property deductible that works similarly to the auto version.13AARP. AARP Homeowners Insurance from The Hartford

Condo

Condo policies cover the interior structure of your unit, including wiring, plumbing, and HVAC, plus personal belongings at replacement cost, loss of use, personal liability, and medical payments for guests injured on your property.14The Hartford. Condo Insurance The policy fills the gap between what the condo association’s master policy covers and what you are personally responsible for. “New for Old” replacement applies here too.

Renters

Renters coverage protects personal belongings, provides personal liability, and pays additional living expenses if a covered loss makes your rental uninhabitable.15The Hartford. AARP Renters Insurance From The Hartford Covered perils include fire, smoke, theft, burglary, and vandalism. Your belongings are protected even when outside the rental, such as items stolen from your car. The same “New for Old” replacement cost feature applies.

Dental and Vision Plans

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care or eye exams, which is why these plans matter. AARP’s dental plan is administered by Delta Dental Insurance Company and covers common dental procedures for individuals or families.16AARP. AARP Dental Plan by Delta Dental Insurance Company AARP vision insurance is offered through VSP, with benefits including annual eye exams and copays for progressive lenses and anti-glare coatings.

If you already have an AARP Medicare Advantage plan, check whether it includes dental and vision benefits before buying standalone coverage. Many Advantage plans bundle these in, and doubling up wastes money.

How to Enroll

Enrollment timing depends on the product. For Medicare Advantage and Part D, the main window is the Open Enrollment Period from October 15 through December 7 each year, with changes taking effect January 1.17Medicare.gov. Open Enrollment During that window you can join, switch, or drop an Advantage plan or Part D drug plan.18Medicare.gov. Joining a Plan Medigap follows a separate timeline: your best opportunity is the six-month window that starts when you first enroll in Part B at 65 or later, when insurers must accept you regardless of health. Miss it, and in most states you may face higher premiums or denial.

Auto, home, and life insurance have no fixed enrollment season. You can apply year-round through The Hartford or New York Life by phone or online. Auto applicants provide driving history, vehicle details, and prior claims. Life applicants answer health questions for term and permanent policies; guaranteed acceptance skips that step.

Before choosing any policy, compare the summary of benefits and the exclusions side by side. AARP’s online tools estimate costs and compare deductibles, but the policy language on what is excluded matters more than the marketing highlights. Coverage gaps in auto and home policies tend to surprise people only after they file a claim.
